As tamil new year is fast approaching I am sharing this easy poli recipe. Poli/ Holige/Obbattu/Boli is a sweet stuffed flat bread made during festive season. Traditionally as a south Indian Poli was made during Tamil newyear/ thamizh varushaparuppu in my house. Traditional poli have the stuffings made with sugar & jaggery dals etc.
As kids i remeber going crazy for those deliciously soft coconut polis that are store brought/ from Boli stalls. This dates poli is a tasty twist to the traditional ones. It tastes as good as the traditional polis. There is zero difference between them except these dates polis are much healthier & softer, Just like poli stalls make.The 3 main components of dates coconut poli is wheat flour, dates & ghee. All the 3 are much more healthier than the Store- brought polis.
Now a days the rate of diabetics are sky rocketing and people fret to eat any sweet. Since dates is good not only for Diabetes but also for young kids, pregnant women everyone in the family can share the happiness & sweets during festival time without any guilt. Here is yet another pregnancy friendly recipe:).

Wheat Flour/ Atta flour
Fresh Coconut, grated
1/3- 1/2 cup
1/4 cup approx.
1. Lets begin by making the dough. To a bowl add flour, salt and mix together. Then gradually add water and knead it to soft sticky dough.
2. Add 1 tbsp of ghee, cover and rest the dough for at least 2 hours.
3. Meanwhile lets prepare the puran/ filling/ dates stuffing.
4. In a sauce pan add dates along with 1/4 cup of water and cook until all the water is absorbed by dates. This is optional and just to rehydrate and enhance the sweetness of the dates. You could just grind the dates too.
5. Allow the dates to cool and grind it to a thick paste in a mixe.
6. Now in the pan add 1 tbsp of ghee, dates paste, coconut cook the mixture on a medium low flame until it thickens, it might forms a layer at the bottom of the pan.
7. Allow the prepared puran to cool as well.
8. After 2 hours, grease your hands and make equal sized balls of both dough and dates puran.
9. Now flatten the dough and stuff the dates puran as shown in the vedio, grease the stuffed dough with ghee.
10. Gently roll it thin in between 2 butter papers. Butter paper helps in rolling and easy cleaning.
11. Finally transfer the poli to a hot tawa and cook on both sides by drizzling some more ghee.
12. Enjoy these healthy festival goodness hot or store it in an air tight container for later.
1. Can substitute atta with all-purpose flour too. 2. Rehydrating the dates is optional, could grind the pitted dates directly. 3. For soft poils the dough must be slightly sticky and must rest for atleast 2 hours. More the resting time more pliable the dough becomes. 4. Stack the polis as soon as done to keep it soft. 5. Applying ghee or oil to the poli at every stage also ensures softness. 6. Using butter paper is also optional, it helps in rolling thin polis without mess. 7. You could use coconut oil instead of ghee. 8. Do not cook the dates puran in high flame, the sugars present will burn quickly. 9. Since we are making it with fresh coconut its shelf life is less. Can be refrigerated for 3-5 days.
